iTunes needs to update Outlook? WTF?

I am installing iTunes 7.0.1 because they still have the best selection of music (though admittedly, I burn them to CD and immediately rip everything in MP3 to strip them of DRM).  When I installed it today, I got this curious complaint from the installer:

Why the %&*$( is Apple updating Outlook?  Anyone have an ideas?

It isn't that iTunes is updating Outlook, it is that iTunes wants to update (probably a DLL) that is being used by Outlook (not necessarily part of the product).

I bet it has something to do with QuickTime.

It's because of the "iTunes Outlook Addin" that's installed. Go to Tools/Options/Other/Advanced Options/COM AddIns and you'll see it. A quick probe of my registry indicates that it's using some Outlook Calendaring services. I have disabled it from attaching at startup. Its ProgID is "iTunesOutlookAddin.CalendarHelper.1". From OLEView I see that it is a dual-interfaced component that also implements IConnectionPointContainer so it must be subscribing to Outlook Calendaring events.

So there is Shareware and Freeware.

iTunes is Terroristware - it does things to your system without your permission.

iTunes is eeeevil!!!!

"It's because of the "iTunes Outlook Addin" that's installed"

What the ...? Have Apple gone crazy?

It looks like the Outlook Addin is to allow you to sync your Calendar and Address Book to your iPod.

<sarcasm>Whaaa? And I thought it was just a music, photo and video player!</sarcasm>

P.S. Bill Craun, Thanks for the info. You are very helpful. Clearly, a good man. :)

It's apparently a plugin for the iphone.

Shawn,

I have outlook 2007 with the connector to windows live and it works like a treat. Th problem came with the other half just bought an iphone and when itunes tried to access it i kept getting errors. I noticed on the files that are setup on the machine i had ost files linked to the windows live accounts.

I changed the way of connection from using the office connector to a pst file using pop3 and smtp settings and it now syncs with itunes/iphone.

The only problem with this is that using this method the calendar and contacts dont sync with windows live now as outlook only checks for incoming and outgoing mail.

What is the best way to have outlook using the connector to windows live to sync with the ipod ? I wanted them all in sync so it one gets updated it just replicates around the place.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Regards
Ivor Duggan
