Fun with Microsoft Tag

Microsoft TAG

I've been playing with Microsoft Tag.  Its pretty cool.  I am pretty surprised how well it works with my phone. If you haven't played with it yet, go create your own. I want to start scanning everything I can so please create them and put them everywhere...

Hmmmm Microsoft are re-inventing the wheel as most phones are compatible with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_Code . Going to download the application give it a whirl :)

Si,

In some respects yes, but I couldn't find a QR Code app for my WinMo...and what I like abuot this one is that the phones distinuish it very quickly. I think the color helps.

Another advantage: It's looking quite more modern than those boring b/w-QR-Tags. And I believe it's no coincidence that Microsoft is using primary colors of the subtractive colored mixture (cmyk).

I like them! :)

Back in 1997, I worked with a company on a competitor to the QR code. At the time, it was called ZapCode. They later changed to GoCode. They were just a bit too quick to market, IMHO. They started competing with the infamous Q-cat readers that Radio Shack gave away. You could place the go codes inline with text in a newspaper or magazine, and use the reader to "hyperlink" the paper to an internet site, or a vCard or whatever you wanted.
You can see some samples of it here: http://www.codecorp.com/gocodesamples.html

Anyway, the real important thing here is that you can use an ordinary cell phone to "scan" the image. You don't need a reader or a scanner. Other people are doing this too. Microsoft is just doing it well, IMHO.

It is pretty slick. However resolving a vcard on my iPhone crashes the Tag Reader. Not so nice, IMO. I can resolve URL tags though, like yours above.

Actually, I was just able to scan a bunch of tags that are vcards. So it must just be something specific with a few of the vcards that causes the iPhone Tag Reader app to crash. Very odd.
